The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the construction of a pedestrian bridge directly connecting Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 (T3) with Newport City is on track and due to open in the first half of 2017.

Once completed, the 220 meters long bridge, dubbed RunWay Manila, will allow the average person to walk the distance between the airport and Newport City in just three minutes, more or less. Currently, the travel time just to get out of NAIA T3 by road can reach over one hour, even longer on certain days.

RunWay Manila is designed to accommodate up to 2,000 persons at any time, or up to 216,000 individuals per day.  The bridge is for the benefit and free use of the public, particularly tourists, who may want safe and convenient alternatives to reach various parts of the metropolis.

According to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), NAIA T3 has the capacity to handle 13M international passengers annually. RunWay Manila will be an enclosed, air-conditioned bridge, with pedestrian-friendly facilities such as moving walkways and elevators, and even a Manila Life Café situated at the T3 side of the bridge. Its modern, eye-catching design is likely to make it an iconic landmark in the Pasay City skyline.

“Given its clear public benefit of reducing vehicular traffic congestion, RunWay Manila has the full support and endorsement of airport authorities as well as all concerned local and national government units,” said DPWH Secretary Mark Villar. “Developed in cooperation with Travellers International Hotel Group, a key benefit of the project will be an enhanced, hassle-free experience for both arriving and departing travelers, making their first and last impression of our country a positive one.”
